About the YouTube thumbnail downloader
This free YouTube thumbnail downloader pulls every thumbnail image YouTube stores for a video — including the Full HD 1280 x 720 version when it exists — and lets you save any of them as JPG, PNG or WebP. It works with normal videos, Shorts and youtu.be links, and it needs no account and no browser extension.
Paste a link and you get every available size listed side by side with its resolution and file size, so you can pick the sharpest one instead of guessing. The images load in your browser straight from YouTube; this site only looks up the public video title and channel name.
The thumbnail sizes YouTube keeps for every video
YouTube does not store one thumbnail. It generates a fixed set of sizes for each video, and this tool shows you all of them:
- Full HD — 1280 x 720. The original image the creator uploaded. Use this one whenever it is there.
- SD — 640 x 480. A 4:3 crop, so widescreen videos get black bars.
- HQ — 480 x 360. Also 4:3, also with bars.
- MQ — 320 x 180. True 16:9 with no bars, useful when you need something small and clean.
- Default — 120 x 90. A tiny preview, rarely worth downloading.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail
- Copy the link to the video, Short or youtu.be address.
- Paste it into the box and select Get thumbnails.
- Compare the sizes that appear. Each one shows its resolution and file size.
- Pick a download format, then save a single image, use Download best quality, or take everything with Download all (ZIP).
Why some videos have no Full HD thumbnail
The 1280 x 720 version only exists if the creator uploaded a custom thumbnail at that size. On older videos, on uploads where YouTube picked a frame automatically, and on many Shorts, that file was never created — so the largest image you can get is the 640 x 480 SD one. No tool can produce a Full HD thumbnail that YouTube does not hold; anything claiming otherwise is upscaling a small image and adding blur.
Black bars, and how to get rid of them
Videos are 16:9 but the SD and HQ thumbnails are stored in an old 4:3 frame, so YouTube pads them with black strips above and below the picture. Turn on Remove black bars and the tool crops those strips away, leaving the real widescreen image. If you want no bars at all without cropping, use the Full HD or MQ size, which are already 16:9.
Collecting thumbnails from 20 videos at once
Switch from One video to Bulk (up to 20) and paste a list of links instead of one. This is the quick way to gather a competitor’s recent thumbnails, build a reference board before designing your own, or archive a playlist. Download all best thumbnails (ZIP) then gives you the sharpest available image from every video in a single file.
Which download format to choose
- Original JPG — the untouched file exactly as YouTube stores it. Best when you want the true original.
- JPG (re-saved) — the same picture written again by your browser, which is what you need after cropping the black bars.
- PNG — lossless and larger. Useful if you are about to edit the image.
- WebP — the smallest file, good for putting the image on a website.
YouTube thumbnail downloader FAQs
Is this YouTube thumbnail downloader free?
Yes. No account, no signup, no watermark and no daily limit on downloads.
Can I download a Shorts thumbnail?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link the same way. Shorts often have fewer sizes available than a normal upload, so you may only see the smaller versions.
Why is the biggest size only 640 x 480 for my video?
Because that video has no custom Full HD thumbnail on YouTube. The 1280 x 720 file is only created when the creator uploads one, so for automatically generated thumbnails the SD size is genuinely the largest that exists.
Can I use someone else’s thumbnail on my own video?
Downloading a public thumbnail is easy, but the image still belongs to whoever made it. Use other people’s thumbnails for research, comparison and inspiration — not as artwork on your own uploads, and not in anything you sell.
What size should I make my own thumbnail?
Design at 1280 x 720 in 16:9, and keep the finished file under YouTube’s 2 MB upload limit. If your design comes out heavier than that, compress it before uploading rather than shrinking the dimensions.
Do I need to log in to YouTube?
No. Thumbnails are public files. The tool never asks for a YouTube account and cannot see one.
Can I download thumbnails from a private video?
No. Only public and unlisted videos have thumbnails that can be reached by a link. Private videos are not available to anyone except the owner.
