About the image metadata remover
This free image metadata remover shows what a photo quietly carries — the GPS location where it was taken, the phone or camera, the date and time, the editing software, and the AI information that tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Adobe Firefly write into their pictures — and removes it in one click. It works on JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF files, one photo or 40 at a time.
Everything happens inside your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to ToolSala or anywhere else, so it is safe to use on family pictures, ID photos and documents.
What hidden data a photo can carry
- GPS location — the exact place a phone photo was taken, often accurate to a few metres. Anyone who gets the original file can open it on a map.
- Camera and phone details — the make and model, the lens and sometimes the camera’s serial number, which links every photo from the same device together.
- Date and time — when the picture was taken and when it was last saved.
- Software — the app or editor that last saved the file.
- Content Credentials (C2PA) — a signed record of how an image was made. ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly, Microsoft Designer, Google and a growing number of phones and cameras add it.
- AI source tags — the IPTC “digital source type” field that marks an image as created or edited with generative AI.
- Saved prompts — Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI and similar tools write the full prompt and settings into PNG files.
- Hidden extras — an embedded thumbnail that can still show the picture before it was cropped, and the short video that motion photos keep after the image.
How to remove metadata from a photo
- Add your photos — select Upload photos or drop them on the box. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF all work.
- Select a photo in the list to see exactly what it reveals: location, camera, dates, software and AI data.
- Select Remove metadata. Every photo in the list is cleaned in a few seconds.
- Download the clean photo, or use Download all (ZIP) for the whole batch.
Your original files are never changed. You always download a separate clean copy, named with -clean at the end.
Does removing metadata reduce quality?
No. For JPG, PNG and WebP the tool does not re-save the picture at all. It cuts the metadata out of the file and leaves the image data exactly as it was, byte for byte, so the clean photo looks identical and is usually a little smaller.
HEIC and AVIF work differently. A browser cannot take those files apart safely, so the photo is redrawn and saved as a high-quality JPG (from HEIC) or PNG (from AVIF). That also leaves every trace of metadata behind.
Photos taken with the phone held sideways stay upright. The tool keeps the single orientation tag that tells apps which way is up; it says nothing about you, your camera or your location.
AI labels on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn
When you upload a picture, Instagram, Facebook and Threads look for industry-standard AI signals in the file: Content Credentials (C2PA) and the IPTC AI source tag. LinkedIn shows a small CR icon on images that carry Content Credentials. This tool removes both, along with any saved prompts, so the file itself no longer records how it was made.
File data is not the only signal, though. Some AI images also carry an invisible watermark mixed into the pixels themselves — Google’s SynthID is one example — and no metadata tool can remove it. Platforms may also use their own detection, and they ask you to disclose realistic AI-generated content, so a label can still appear. Removing metadata does not change what an image is: follow each platform’s rules on labelling AI content.
When removing metadata matters
- Selling on OLX, Quikr or Facebook Marketplace, where a photo taken at home can reveal your address.
- Sending pictures of your children, your house or your car to people you do not know well.
- Sharing photos by email, Google Drive, Telegram files or WhatsApp documents, which pass the original file along unchanged.
- Posting on forums, blogs and your own website, where images are often published exactly as they were uploaded.
- Sending work images without revealing which device, software or account made them.
Image metadata remover FAQs
Is this image metadata remover free?
Yes. There is no signup and no watermark. Clean as many photos as you like, 40 at a time.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photos are read and cleaned by your own browser, on your own device, and are never sent to ToolSala or any other server. If your browser cannot open HEIC photos by itself, it downloads a free HEIC reader once; the photo still stays on your device.
Will my photo look different after cleaning?
A JPG, PNG or WebP keeps every pixel exactly as it was, because the picture is not re-saved. HEIC and AVIF photos are redrawn as JPG or PNG at high quality, a difference you will not see at normal viewing size.
Does it remove the GPS location from iPhone and Android photos?
Yes. The GPS coordinates and everything else the camera stored — make and model, lens, serial number, date and time, software — are removed from the copy you download. The photo on your phone is not changed.
Will this stop the “AI info” label on Instagram or LinkedIn?
It removes the Content Credentials and the IPTC AI tag that Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn read from the file. It cannot remove invisible watermarks such as SynthID, and platforms may still apply a label from their own detection or ask you to disclose AI content. Follow each platform’s rules on AI-generated images.
Can I check what a photo contains without changing it?
Yes. Add the photo and select it in the list: every detail the tool finds is shown before anything is removed. Nothing changes until you select Remove metadata, and even then your original file stays as it is.
Don’t WhatsApp and Instagram already remove metadata?
Most social apps strip the location from the copy other people see, but they read the file first, and the original you send as a document, an email attachment or a cloud link keeps everything. Cleaning the photo before it leaves your device is the only way to be sure.
