About the PIN code finder
This free PIN code finder works both ways. Type a 6-digit PIN code and it tells you the post offices, district and state it covers. Type an area or post office name and it tells you the PIN code. You can also browse every PIN code in a district, or let the tool find the one you are standing in.
Searches run against a public postal directory held on ToolSala, so results appear instantly. Near me is the only feature that uses your location, and it sends it to a single lookup service purely to name your area.
What the six digits of a PIN code mean
PIN stands for Postal Index Number, introduced across India in 1972. The six digits are a nested address, read left to right:
- Digit 1 — the zone. One of nine broad regions of the country.
- Digits 1–2 — the sub-zone, narrowing it to a postal circle.
- Digits 1–3 — the sorting district, the office that routes the mail.
- Digits 4–6 — the delivery post office itself.
So in 400001, the 4 places you in western India, 40 narrows it to Mumbai’s circle, 400 is the sorting district and 001 is the specific post office.
The nine zones, by first digit
- 1 — Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Chandigarh
- 2 — Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand
- 3 — Rajasthan, Gujarat, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu
- 4 — Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa
- 5 — Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka
- 6 — Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Lakshadweep
- 7 — West Bengal, Odisha, the North Eastern states, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands
- 8 — Bihar, Jharkhand
- 9 — Army Postal Service, for APO and FPO addresses
No Indian PIN code begins with zero. If you have been given one that does, it is a typing mistake.
Three ways to search
- PIN code — enter the six digits and select Find PIN details to see every post office inside it, plus the district, state and nearby PIN codes.
- Area / post office — type an area, locality or post office name and select Find PIN code.
- State & district — choose a state, then a district, to browse every PIN code recorded there.
Near me uses your device location to name the area you are in and look up its PIN code. Your browser will ask permission first, and nothing happens until you allow it.
Why one area can have several PIN codes
PIN codes follow the postal network, not the map people carry in their heads. A large locality served by several post offices will have several PIN codes, and a single PIN code often covers a group of nearby villages served by one office. Big cities have hundreds.
Area names repeat across the country too — there is more than one Gandhi Nagar, more than one Shivaji Nagar. When a name search returns several results, check the district and state column before copying anything. Adding the state to your search narrows it straight away.
Head office, sub office, branch office
Post office listings carry a type, and it explains the hierarchy:
- H.O. — Head Office. The main office of a postal district, handling accounts for the offices under it.
- S.O. — Sub Office. A full post office in a town or city area.
- B.O. — Branch Office. A small rural office, usually reporting to a nearby sub office.
For a delivery address, the office type does not matter — the PIN code does. It matters when you need a service like a passport application or speed post booking, which smaller branch offices may not handle.
PIN code FAQs
Is this PIN code finder free?
Yes. No account, no signup and no limit on searches.
How many digits is an Indian PIN code?
Six, always, and it never starts with zero. A five-digit or seven-digit number is not an Indian PIN code.
Why does my area show more than one PIN code?
Because PIN codes follow post offices. If your locality is served by more than one office, it has more than one code. Use the one printed on post you actually receive, or the one your post office confirms.
What does the first digit of a PIN code tell me?
It gives you the zone. 1 is the Delhi and northern region, 4 covers Maharashtra and central India, 6 is Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and 9 is reserved for Army Post Office addresses.
Can I find the PIN code where I am standing now?
Yes. Select Near me and allow the location request. Your position is used only to name the area and find its PIN code.
Do PIN codes ever change?
Rarely, but yes. India Post reorganises delivery areas from time to time and new codes appear as towns grow. Check the current code before printing address labels in bulk.
What is the difference between a PIN code and a ZIP code?
They do the same job in different countries. PIN code is India’s six-digit system; ZIP code is the American one, with five digits. Indian forms that ask for a ZIP code simply want your PIN code.
